TERRE ROCHE BIO

A singer, songwriter, guitar player, teacher, author, innkeeper and founding member of the legendary vocal trio, The Roches, and the band Afro-Jersey, Terre has performed in many clubs and concert halls throughout the United States and Europe and appeared on numerous TV shows over the course of her 50-plus year career.  She is a co-creator with jazz pianist Garry Dial of “Us an’ Them,” a collection of national anthems from 16 nations. Her composition, “Star of Wonder,” has become a favorite repertoire piece in choirs around the world and is now published by E.C. Schirmer.

Terre sang the role of Squeaky Fromme in John Moran’s avant-garde opera The Manson Family.  She is the author of Blabbermouth, a memoir about her surprising journey coming-of-age as a female musician in the 1970’s. She has worked with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Linda Ronstadt, Meredith Monk, Don Was, The Muscle Shoals Swampers, Robert Fripp, Tracey Ullman, Kathy Mattea and Garry Dial among others.  Terre’s first solo album The Sound of a Tree Falling was released in 1998. Imprint, a collection of original compositions performed with bassist Jay Anderson, was released in 2015.

In 2022, Terre released Kin Ya See That Sun an audio album of live recordings of Terre and her sister Maggie doing arrangements of songs they did when they were teenagers traveling around the country to play on the college coffee house circuit.  The album contains many of the songs from Terre and Maggie’s debut duo album Seductive Reasoning as they were originally arranged, for just two voices and two guitars. The album was released digitally and is also presented in a very original and unique format – a hardcover book that includes lyrics, photographs, drawings, and recollections from various people who remember Terre and Maggie from way back when.  The book contains QR codes to download the album and also stream individual songs. In April 2025, the NY Times celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Maggie and Terre’s Roche’s album Seductive Reasoning with glowing praise from the writer Dwight Garner.

In 2024, Terre released Inner Adult, a new album of thirteen original songs, her first since 2015. The songs were recorded at Coral Star Studio on St. John all in one take.  The album was released digitally and is also presented as a book like Kin Ya See That Sun.

In September of 2026 Terre will be the featured performer and host in an installment of “Village Nights” at The Bitter End in New York. She will be doing the segment on the 1970s. Joined by her guests, Terri Thal and Michael Tannen, two people who she credits with putting her on the path of music, this will be an opportunity to sing some songs and talk about what those days were like for young folksingers.

TERRE ROCHE PRESS CLIPS

About Inner Adult:

“How do you express in words something whose words express everything perfectly on their own? I want to begin by saying that everyone should listen to this album just as it was recorded; in one take. As a full piece….Terre has a signature impossible to forge, much as someone might want to try, if only to claim the message as their own – because it not only resonates with their soul, but because it is such a genuine and original art form, anyone would be proud to call it theirs.”
– Cynthia Daniels, Grammy/Emmy Award winning recording engineer and producer

About Kin Ya See That Sun:

“One of the coolest releases of 2022, Kin Ya See That Sun brings together 15 previously unreleased live and studio tracks by two of the three singing Roche sisters, Terre and Maggie, who were a performing folk duo dating back to their teen years…The sisters’ instantly identifiable vocal harmonies are of course in evidence throughout the album, as is the blend of tunes that range from classic folk tropes to odd, sometimes funny musings on life that can sound like bits of overheard conversation (or someone thinking out loud)…”
– Blair Jackson, Acoustic Guitar Magazine

“Seductive Reasoning” is a young person’s record, a product of overlapping propinquities, made by a college dropout (Maggie) and a high school dropout (Terre) who possessed swooping blood harmonies, a novelistic deftness with language and a whole raft of intense perceptions and inchoate longings to draw upon….Maggie and Terre knew they were scrutinized. “You had one eye on my dungarees and another on my reviews,” they sing in “If You Empty Out All Your Pockets You Could Not Make the Change.” They refused to bend to a music world that wanted to get them out of their thrift store clothes and tease their hair. When no door was opened to them, they jumped out the window.”
– Dwight Gardner, The New York Times,
Critics Corner – “Maggie & Terre Roche’s 1975 LP Is a Revelation. Why Is It Forgotten?”

LISA AND LORI BRIGANTINO PRESS CLIPS:

“The talented Brigantino sisters put on a show unlike any other – well-rounded,
and immensely entertaining, and their musical talent is undeniable.

– Jenna Esposito, Broadwayworld.com

“Most notable is the duo’s multi-instrumental proficiency…
What they have is both unique and brimming with good-natured playfulness.”
– Music Connection Magazine.

“…Very talented musicians…each of them switching off on numerous
different instruments over the course of a set.”
– Downtown Express

About I’ll Waltz Before I Go:
“Lisa Brigantino doesn’t need excessive production – her voice is a wall of sound all by itself. And as for variety, it’s hard to find an album with more variety than I’ll Waltz Before I Go…Brigantino’s voice itself is something truly special. It combines the brightness and clarity of a precocious twenty-something, with all the range and control of a woman with decades of practice under her belt….Nearly every track is a standout…This is a stunner of an album.”
– Round Magazine
